Mingei
Surround Yourself with Objects of Beauty - Yanagi Soetsu.
Our inspiration is influenced strongly by the aesthetic of "mingei," or folk craft (folk art,) a term coined by Yanagi Soetsu, leader of the Japanese Folk Craft Movement, and founder of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. Mingei objects are utilitarian, commonplace, healthy, and reflect the hand and heart of their maker. We find in these qualities, in opposition to those of fine arts for decoration, or objects used by the aristocracy, the source of their beauty.
While the majority of works have been gathered while living in or travelling to Japan, the mingei aesthetic was never intended to be limited to Japanese works alone. Therefore, items from other cultures, such as SE Asian Ceramics and Textiles, and early American Pottery are also represented in our collection.
We also offer custom-designed tours of Japan. We can create a flexible itinerary, based on your specific interests; mingei, gardens, spiritual and historic sites, and more. Please see our weblog for further information and a sample itinerary.
WaSabiDou Collection
Our collection includes antique furniture (such as tansu,) antique through contemporary pottery from Japan, SE Asia, and America; folk textiles, and other "komingu" (daily use items.) Contemporary pottery, prints, and other works are made by craftspeople inspired by Mingei, as well as wabi-sabi philosophy and aesthetics. Antique Japanese prints, exhibiting the craft skills of master woodblock carvers and printers working in conjunction with artists of the day; and modern "sosaku" prints are also included.
Should you share our passion for the simple, healthy, natural, and honest beauty of traditional crafts, we look forward to having you join our circle of friends and clientele.
